Overview

Estelí: The World Capital of Premium Tobacco

If you’ve ever smoked a Nicaraguan cigar, there’s a high probability the tobacco came from Estelí. This northern Nicaraguan city, sitting at 843 meters elevation, with volcanic soil and warm days followed by cool nights; produces some of the most sought-after tobacco in the world.

Brands like Padrón, My Father Cigars, Rocky Patel, Oliva, and Drew Estate all make their cigars in Estelí. It’s no coincidence: Nicaraguan tobacco has won more international cigar competition medals over the last decade than any other country of origin.

This tour takes you behind the scenes of that industry.

What You’ll See and Do

This isn’t a museum tour with photos of old equipment. It’s a working field experience — you go to the real places where each stage of the process happens:

  • Tobacco growing fields: See the crops firsthand. Your guide explains how seeds are selected, how plants are grown, and why Estelí’s soil produces leaves that can’t be replicated anywhere else on Earth.
  • Premium cigar factories: Enter an active factory and watch the rollers — skilled artisans who hand-roll each cigar. An expert roller produces between 80 and 120 cigars per day. Each one is different.
  • Fermentation and aging rooms: Freshly harvested tobacco doesn’t taste like the final cigar. The fermentation process can last from 6 months to 3 years. You enter the fermentation bulks and understand why time is the secret ingredient.
  • Direct purchase (optional): If you fall in love with a particular cigar during the tour, you can buy directly from the factory at producer prices.
